Potential customers are beginning to use AI-powered tools to research services, compare suppliers and ask detailed questions. This has led to growing interest in GEO, or Generative Engine Optimisation.
GEO aims to make a business’s online information easier for generative AI systems to find, understand and use when producing a relevant answer.
It does not offer a guaranteed route into ChatGPT, Google’s AI features or any other platform. It is better understood as a practical extension of good SEO, content and digital reputation work.
What does GEO stand for?
GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimisation. A generative engine creates a response to a user’s question rather than only displaying a conventional list of links.
GEO focuses on whether those systems can confidently interpret important facts about an organisation, such as:
- what it does;
- who it helps;
- where it operates;
- what experience or expertise it has;
- what evidence supports its claims; and
- which pages provide the best answer to a particular question.
The term is relatively new and its exact definition varies across the industry. That makes it important to avoid anyone presenting GEO as a secret formula or a guaranteed ranking system.
How is GEO different from SEO?
SEO traditionally focuses on visibility within search-engine results and encouraging relevant visits to a website. GEO focuses on how information may be interpreted and used within a generated response.
The outcomes may look different, but much of the work overlaps.
| SEO | GEO |
|---|---|
| Supports visibility in organic search results | Supports visibility within generative answers and their sources |
| Often measures rankings, impressions, clicks and conversions | May examine mentions, citations, referral visits and conversions |
| Requires crawlable, useful and authoritative content | Also depends on accessible, clear and credible information |
GEO should not replace SEO. Google advises that standard SEO best practices remain relevant for its AI Overviews and AI Mode and says there are no additional technical requirements or special AI schema needed for inclusion.
SEO, GEO, AEO and AI Search: What’s the Difference?
What might help a business appear in AI-generated answers?
No single action can secure inclusion, and platforms do not publish a complete formula. The following improvements are nevertheless valuable because they make information more useful and understandable to customers as well as machines.
Publish focused, useful content
Create pages that fully address a genuine customer need. Avoid broad statements that could describe any competitor. Explain who a service is for, how it works, what it includes and what choices or limitations customers should understand.
Demonstrate first-hand experience
Use real examples, case studies, processes, original research and lessons from completed work. Generic content is easy to reproduce; genuine experience gives a page something distinctive to contribute.
Make claims verifiable
Support important claims with appropriate evidence. This might include named qualifications, client outcomes, methodology, independent reviews or links to authoritative sources.
Avoid unsupported superlatives such as “the leading provider” unless they can be substantiated.
Identify the people behind the content
Include meaningful author information and explain why that person is qualified to cover the subject. Maintain a detailed About page and make the organisation’s history, team and contact details easy to find.
Create a clear information structure
Use descriptive headings, concise introductory answers and internal links between related pages. Each important service should have a dedicated page rather than being mentioned only in a long list.
Keep facts consistent
Business names, services, locations and contact information should be accurate across your website, Google Business Profile, trusted directories and relevant professional profiles.
Maintain technical accessibility
Ensure crawlers can access important pages, that content is rendered as readable text and that indexing instructions are correct. Structured data can help describe visible information when implemented accurately, but it is not a guarantee of an AI citation.
Do you need an llms.txt file or special AI schema?
You may encounter claims that one new file or piece of markup will make a website visible in AI search. Treat these promises cautiously.
For Google’s own AI search features, its published guidance says businesses do not need new AI text files, special machine-readable files or special schema.org markup. Normal crawling, indexing and SEO requirements apply.
Different AI platforms can have their own crawlers and controls, so your technical setup should be reviewed in context. However, no file can compensate for weak content, unclear business information or a lack of credible evidence.
Can GEO guarantee that ChatGPT or Google will recommend you?
No. Generated answers can vary, and the platforms decide which information to retrieve, cite or display. The wording of the question, the user’s context and changes to the product can all affect the response.
A responsible GEO service should improve the quality, clarity and accessibility of your online presence, monitor relevant outcomes and explain uncertainty honestly. It should not promise permanent AI rankings.
How can GEO performance be monitored?
Possible measures include:
- citations and brand mentions for a carefully selected set of relevant questions;
- referral visits from AI platforms where this data is available;
- changes in branded search and direct traffic;
- performance of pages strengthened through the work; and
- qualified enquiries, bookings or sales.
Because AI answers can change from one query to another, a single screenshot is not proof of sustained visibility. Monitoring should be repeated consistently and connected to real business results.
Is your website ready for generative search?
A GEO review should begin with fundamentals: technical access, content quality, entity clarity, expertise, evidence and reputation. In many cases, the most valuable opportunities also improve conventional SEO and the customer experience.
Designweb can assess your website and wider online presence, identify gaps and build a practical plan for improving visibility across both traditional and AI-powered search.
